To help you get started, understand that a good classified ad needs to address the
following four elements: Attention, Interest, Desire and Action.
1. Attention. You must first get the buyers' attention. Your title should do that.
Be creative, keep it short and mention the best benefit of your product or service.
It's also important to place a keyword in your title, because many buyers will run
keyword searches to find what they’re looking for.
In addition, try to use some well-proven “power words” to grab the buyers' attention.
Here are some examples: Free, Discover, Easy, Simple, Guarantee, New, Proven,
Introducing, Now, Special, Affordable, Unique, Opportunity, Breakthrough, Greatest,
How To, The Truth About, It’s Here, Insider, Affordable, etc.
Whatever words you use to start your ad, keep in mind that they'll be competing with
similar ads on the same page. The reader is probably scanning the page, so the first
two or three words must grab the reader’s attention! In addition to your lead words,
your ad must quickly go on to state further benefits to the reader.

| |
Your ad might start something like this:
Make Big Money From Home!
|
|
2. Interest. Your ad needs to be appealing to arouse the interest of the reader. You already
have the reader’s attention: you’ve told the reader that he can make “Big Money” and that he
can make it “From Home.” Now, within the description of the ad, mention your top benefits.
This is also a great place to insert more power words to get the reader interested and wanting
to know more!

3. Desire. Now you want to feed the reader’s desire for your product or service. You have his
attention; he is already interested; now, the reader must desire what you’ve got! Emphasize any
other benefits or features that would make the reader “want” to respond.

Remember, your goal in advertising copywriting is to get the reader to act – not to sell.
Write your ad to grab the reader’s attention – arouse his interest – feed his desire - and
take action! Once you’ve generated this responsive, highly-targeted traffic, your website or
offer should do the selling.

Tips, Tricks and Techniques
1. Your goal is to get the reader to respond – typically to visit your website or call for
more information.
2. Short, direct ads usually perform better than longer wordy ads.
3. Do not attempt to sell your product or service in the ad – instead try to generate interest
and desire.
4. Use “power words” to communicate your message.
5. Emphasize your product or service’s benefits over its features. You’re not selling
fertilizer – you’re offering a beautiful green lawn!
6. Distinguish what you’re offering from the competition. How is your offer unique?
7. Try different ads for the same product or service and track the results. If your ad isn’t
performing well – don’t give up, write a new one.
8. Direct the reader to take action! Tell them exactly what you want them to do.
9. Learn through trial and error.
10. Post your ads regularly to keep your message in front of potential customers. Repetition
can be a good thing!
